Hello sunshines! I moved from kindergarten to first grade! I am so excited to be back in first grade after a long stretch in kindergarten. I am loving how my first graders can do so much!! Such a fun age! Since I moved into a new room, I decided to change up my classroom theme- Be the sunshine! Here are a few pics giving a glimpse of my current classroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Class hallway bulletin board</td></tr>

I only have one small bulletin board in my classroom, so I used the wall space above the cubbies to make a clothesline bulletin board. I hot glued a laminated sunshine face on each black clothespin. It is working beautifully to display their work.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRoMPrV0NIeXeIQ3PE0-5yybEuzvy3OeH5p5pBy3K4i6CPr2s2vbDw8jQMa_xosuaFH9ewn90VgcG5u-tBSEiHzDJg_Kxm1co-L_1UYPyATT1INGMobI4_JC7ud65-mW1quz76gDxmEwNA/s1600/BetheSunshine3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="826" data-original-width="1125" height="468" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRoMPrV0NIeXeIQ3PE0-5yybEuzvy3OeH5p5pBy3K4i6CPr2s2vbDw8jQMa_xosuaFH9ewn90VgcG5u-tBSEiHzDJg_Kxm1co-L_1UYPyATT1INGMobI4_JC7ud65-mW1quz76gDxmEwNA/s640/BetheSunshine3.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I saved some of my owl stuff to decorate my classroom library area. Here's part of the library with the one bulletin board in the room.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifX7aNV3wYFvX5JFGycIforevJCvFQFtjhqqz-u9oALch94vemvZze10ZolS036nX3oadrc5U8t7k_jUYxXiPe-hHEf3Zk1EZ6QzKdKFGlGjEEf3IJtVFbtvQmwwDiHpfSKXwTCtR4_Fne/s1600/BetheSunshine2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1025" data-original-width="663" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifX7aNV3wYFvX5JFGycIforevJCvFQFtjhqqz-u9oALch94vemvZze10ZolS036nX3oadrc5U8t7k_jUYxXiPe-hHEf3Zk1EZ6QzKdKFGlGjEEf3IJtVFbtvQmwwDiHpfSKXwTCtR4_Fne/s640/BetheSunshine2.png" width="412" /></a></div>
<br />
I created some decorations for my whiteboard. A set of rules: Be the sunshine, Be safe, Be kind, Try your best, and Lead with Love. Underneath those rules is a space designated for sunshine notes written by me and classmates.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Our favorite time of the day is Read to Self time! They are already reading 15+ minutes! Here are some empty baskets before the students came. Then a close up with some books in the baskets.<br />

<br />
Our cubbies are not the prettiest. So I laminated some cardstock with clipart to make them a little more appealing. The suns on their STAR binders make me smile!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6w1zX5PoPCigrXd8AFrn3NWhkryFlWBtLUP4gnoF6_wpFFcNqHj9NBHS1NqPm5rggj6PLEFZQSCQS_hqA6KiwYnqxzpiDyEhfkoCk3p_Grg7JG8CCxVMTdymrwU5XUt0WguGbtqICZOQB/s1600/BetheSunshine7.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="850" data-original-width="1500" height="181" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6w1zX5PoPCigrXd8AFrn3NWhkryFlWBtLUP4gnoF6_wpFFcNqHj9NBHS1NqPm5rggj6PLEFZQSCQS_hqA6KiwYnqxzpiDyEhfkoCk3p_Grg7JG8CCxVMTdymrwU5XUt0WguGbtqICZOQB/s320/BetheSunshine7.png" width="320" /></a></div>

I took their self portraits off the hallway bulletin board and posted them next to the cubbies around one of our weekly quotes.<br />

Time to start thinking about the new school year! My start of the school year has to do with s'mores. It all began with my s'more obsession at the end of last school year. I went on a s,more kick- drinking Dunkin Donuts S'mores Iced Coffee and eating S'mores pop tarts. (I don't even eat pop tarts!) I was so excited to find out that National S'mores Day is Thursday, August 10th. Which is the first day of school in my district!!!</div>

Since I am at a Leader in Me school, I made a back to school s'mores board. At the end of the last school year, I had my kindergarten students write a tip about being a leader for my new students. At the beginning of this school year, I plan to have my new kindergartners brainstorm ways to be a kindergarten leader and make their own s'mores for this bulletin board.</div>

Life has been a little bit more joyful with this little puppy! Meet Daisy, our Shihtzu. We got her late April and she has stolen our hearts! I am busy making different little bows for her to wear. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We do! This is the first school year that my county has initiated coding in kindergarten. My kinders and I are having fun with it! They are completely engaged and excited about learning with our bee bots. After a few lessons about coding, directional words, and algorithms, they were ready to work in small groups.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First, before splitting them into groups, we discussed how we could synergize and communicate with our teams. Each child was given a job: Coder, Card Handler, Algorithm Reader, Beebot Programmer, and Supervisor. The job cards were made into necklaces so that each child remembered his job.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Supervisor</b>: decides where Beebot goes and makes sure everyone is doing what they are suppose to</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Coder</b>: creates algorithm for Beebot to get to the specified area</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Card Handler</b>: puts directions cards down for the algorithm created by the coder</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Algorithm Reader</b>: read the algorithm to the programmer</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Beebot Programmer</b>: push buttons on Beebot and make sure Beebot stays safe</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They switched jobs after a round of trying to get Beebot to the specified area. This way, each child got a turn at all the jobs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In math, my kindergartners used Beebots to describe and identify shapes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

During our literacy block, some groups reviewed letters and sounds.<br />

Summer flies by too quickly! Last week, I spent time with my family visiting from out of town. This week, I am at workshops and pre-planning. I will meet my new students next week!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>For My 1st Monday Made It:</b> I usually like to make something for my team for the first day of school. I wanted to make a first day survival kit for them. My friend Tina and I made pencils out of Pringles cans. They are not quite done, but I think they turned out so cute! I filled them up with all sorts of goodies. I still need to add the tags, but that will be later! I will be making one for myself as a box top collector.</div>

My <b>2nd Monday Made It</b> project is for my littles when they come to Meet the Teacher night. Typically I make homemade cookies, but just didn't feel like baking and icing the cookies this summer. I found some adorable owl pops on Sue's <a href="http://theverybusykindergarten.blogspot.com/2011/08/candy-owl-pops.html" target="_blank"><i>The Very Busy Kindergarten</i></a>. I had to make my own! These were definitely easier and timely! </div>

</div>
I go back to work on Monday- for workshops and preplanning. The children will be starting in 2 weeks! I have done a few things to get ready for back to school, but it seems I have a serious issue- a scattered brain!! While working on an alphabet center, I got distracted when I saw Brenda and Ciera's Back to School Book Linky.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.primaryinspired.net/2015/07/back-to-school-book-favorite-freebie.html" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.primaryinspired.net/2015/07/back-to-school-book-favorite-freebie.html" border="0" height="202" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOPLFKWpmNyyIh-JzAtAAnqHbiG3fQRbhP5BBUagJlEcWFiIcpPZMaeMzCnJdjAFUCFrToI0KMh5KdxLMFTePBXzaiPC46pAIbCnZ1htt_2e2NXMh6OxnEh643g6Z99qkycngt0lngVwZn/s320/B2S+Book+Favorites.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I love books! One of my favorite authors is Robert Munsch. Children can relate to and laugh at his stories. During that first week of school, I like to use three of his books. The first one is <u><i>Moira's Birthday</i></u>. I found a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8qNMM9Gjis" target="_blank">youtube video</a>! However, I like reading the book better. This story is about Moira who invites Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Kindergarten to her birthday party! She is quite the problem solver. I love how my kindergarteners react to this book and their facial expressions are priceless!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Moiras-Birthday-Classic-Munsch-Robert/dp/0920303838/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438216789&sr=8-1&keywords=moira%27s+birthday+munsch" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr1t6GEscSEe-UdLk2wN-SJvXlHuGqfes-x9aImUj77rKXMkmm5XDj3Ta7NDmj1_-wUPu0uC8gXIuUGdgFyyCzi4KqaLkcnNV4giGYluhbbFpFC07TxsCjtOSZGf9lShpf5XKL6N3IhWh8/s320/614wR9oUt-L__SX495_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I typically use this book during math before making a class graph about our birthdays. I use a classroom door to post the months of the year. Then I give each of my students a die-cut circle. They decorate the circles to look like themselves. We add them to the door with a tag stating their first name and birthdate. We use this birthday graph throughout the school year. Wish I had a picture to show. I couldn't find one easily accessible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another story I read for math time is <u><i>Purple, Green, and Yellow</i></u>. This story is about a little girl who loves to color with different markers. This story is a great lead in to a class graph about our favorite colors.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Purple-Green-Yellow-Classic-Munsch/dp/1550372564/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438219022&sr=8-1&keywords=yellow%2C+green%2C+blue+robert+munsch" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.amazon.com/Purple-Green-Yellow-Classic-Munsch/dp/1550372564/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438219022&sr=8-1&keywords=yellow%2C+green%2C+blue+robert+munsch" border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW0BIqoaq_ytIOQpHP8q7VKUCXh1aH5Kun3W_acXIHKWSS1gj68zN4YDuzOKijitWGtxaHukaBJ9-BOcqkfaxHkg_zhQjTrzvv7agT8HCmLC1Kr09lbhPYf1xk2huM3twZzl45CnPXfTFH/s320/61vXl28ANFL__SX496_BO1%252C204%252C203%252C200_.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In kindergarten, my students color paper crayons and we make a floor graph about our favorite colors. When I taught first grade, I did it a little differently. I had my first graders bring their favorite colored crayon over to the circle. They sat together in a circle with same colors together. I stood in the middle and used masking tape to show the piece of the pie for blues, and then to the next color. I also took a picture and put it into a classbook of graphs. We discussed what we noticed and added that information to the classbook of graphs. So sad, no picture easily accessible for me to post!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another Robert Munsch book, I enjoy using in kindergarten is <u>We Share Everything</u>. This is a great story about two kindergarten kids who learn to share everything. It is a great lead in to how we share many things in kindergarten, but there are some things we do not share (kisses, lunch, snack...). Robert Munsch has his <a href="http://robertmunsch.com/" target="_blank">own website</a> with auditory downloads to go along with his books. I have downloaded many to go along with the books I already have in my classroom library to use at the listening center. Many of his books are also found in ebook format on <a href="http://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/Default.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f" target="_blank">Tumblebooks</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using Robert Munsch books helps my kindergarteners love listening to stories for enjoyment. His books easily captures my students' attention during that first week of school. If you have not read any of his books, you should check them out, especially if you love humorous stories. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I love to travel! So this linky hopefully will inspire me to discover some new place to explore. I especially love places that have seasons. Being in Florida, does not give me many opportunities to see a blustery fall day or a snowy winter white one.</div>

It has been a while since I have been to <span style="font-size: small;"><b>Hendersonville, North Carolina</b></span>. It is one of my favorite hidden places. My sister and her family lived there for a little while, and I stayed with them two times: once in the winter and once in the summer. Hendersonville has one main downtown street with yummy restaurants and cute shops. One restaurant in particular stood out. I don't remember its name, but the restaurant got their food locally and served seasonal deliciousness. I was surprised at the sushi place, <a href="http://www.umihendersonville.com/" target="_blank">Umi's</a>. It is the only place I have seen soy wrapped sushi. I have been to many sushi restaurants, and this was a new concept to me. Amazing to find it in such a small town! Before my summer visit, I had never liked peaches. They were watery and mealy- yucky in my opinion. I changed my mind once I tried some at the market stands. Deliciousness!! I also discovered heirloom tomatoes. Food there just taste so magnificent! Besides yummies, there are plenty of outdoorsy things to do. My favorite was visiting Hooker Falls, a cute little waterfall swimming area. Last summer, while visiting family in Asheville, I didn't get to make it up to Hendersonville. I really want to see it in the fall and go apple picking!</div>

The second place is <b>Washington, D.C.</b> I have been a few times, but usually for a day trip. My hubby and I went in 2013 to see the cherry blossoms, but it was a long winter, and I <i>almost </i>missed it. The trees had not bloomed yet... just blossoms. :0( They have a great zoo there- I loved how the monkeys could go up their towers and travel between the two monkey homes. We walked everywhere, taking the train only to the zoo. So many free places to visit. The last full day, we happened upon 3-4 little cherry blossom trees. So pretty! Made me happy to see them! During our last night, it snowed a bit, and left an inch on the branches. </div>

The third place is my favorite city: <b>Seattle, Washington</b>. I don't have any pictures to share, as they were from a while back. I went in October to see fall, and I loved it! I loved Pike's Market, the great coffee, art museums, Space Needle, etc. It was fun just walking around and discovering the city. I almost moved there because I loved it so much. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On a side note, on my bucket list there are at least 3 places new I would like to visit...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Macchu Picchu (better start running again, so I can be in better shape for that hike)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Antarctica (on a cruise and take an excursion to walk with the penguins, certainly not for the marathon that is held there!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Africa (go on a safari and say I have visited all the continents!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It took me a while to figure out how many years I have taught kindergarten. I have also taught 1st and 2nd grade... looping up with classes and going back. Next year will be my 20th year of teaching and 10th year in kindergarten!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Besides the people who surround me, I cannot live without my flash drive. This may be due to me being somewhat nomadic. I moved classrooms for the first 14 years of my career. Then I stayed 3 years in one kindergarten classroom, and then off to moving again. I am hoping to stay in my current room for the 2nd year. So I keep all my digital files, music, videos, pictures, ideas, etc on my flash drive! This helps keep me sane, rather than hunting for a CD or idea in one of my many boxes that I do not remember where I put or placed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love books! I have books all over my classroom. I especially am fond of Pete the Cat books. Love the positive messages in them. What did we do before Pete the Cat was created??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are so many great blogs out there. One of my favorite blogs is <a href="http://differentiatedkindergarten.com/" target="_blank">Differentiated Kindergarten</a>. I have learned so much from Marsha McGuire and how to organize my own differentiated centers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I adore kindergarten. Kindergarteners are naturally curious, brutally honest, and genuine. They make me laugh and keep me in the moment. They keep me young! Well I am off to learn about some other kindergarten teachers.</div>

Happy belated July 4th! I have been meaning to blog all through June, but my friends and family have kept me distracted... which is a wonderful thing! During my free time, I also managed to create two things... one for a friend and one for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of my teammates has a cute monster theme to her kindergarten classroom. I love it! Her room is a bright and cheerful place to learn in. She has created her own monster lanterns and monster pillows- adorable!! Well, I spotted her Rate Your Understanding chart, and loved how it was backed on black paper and connected with red polka dotted ribbon. In my mind, there was a slight issue, it was a superhero theme versus her cute colorful happy monster theme. So I made her one, using monster graphics. Click on one of the pictures if you would like this freebie too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last school year, I really started having issues helping my little ones keep their word sorting activities organized. I had their sorts in a basket with their numbers on clothespins. The clothespins kept breaking apart. So, I thought about it... and remember those teacher tool boxes that everyone made a few years back. I went to Lowe's and bought one. It was in my car trunk for months! I was going to paint it black... but decided to just go with it. I plan to hang it up on my classroom wall. This should help me keep my student word sorts differentiated as well as organized!</div>

Do you hear the crickets chirping? It has been way too quiet on here. My work life has kept me very busy! I think this will be a pattern for a while. Too much going on. So what are my 5 highlights for this past week?</div>

<span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;"><strong>1.</strong></span> My district uses Reading Street as its series. At my school, we use it as a resource. This past week we worked with the big book <u>Baby Animals in the Grasslands</u>. I made my first bridge map with my kinderkids. Our vocabulary consisted mostly of baby animal names. I went online and printed out some pictures from google searches. Then I laminated them so I could use those pictures again.<br />

<span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;"><strong>2.</strong></span> I was looking for a new lion craft, and was inspired by <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/pin/161918549078524165/" target="_blank">this pinterest pin</a>. I gave each of my kinderkids one yellow 11"X11" square to paint stripes from the center out. For the head, I gave each child a 3 1/2"X 5 1/2" yellow rectangle. We cut the 4 corners and rounded it to make an oval shape. We used the scraps to make ears. I modeled how to make a lion face. They did great! Each one came out adorable! Then each kinderkid cut around his mane to make a fringe and added yarn for texture. Last we glued the heads on. On another day, we used <a href="http://kindergals.blogspot.com/2012/11/all-about-lionsthinking-about-non.html" target="_blank">Kim Adsit's lion treemap</a>. To help my kinderkids understand how to make a sentence, I made a tree map on a pocket chart. Since children come up with ideas that I do not think of- I wrote them on sentence strips and added them. I forgot to take a picture of it, but to get your own tree map pieces click <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9ORGQbk5uVmZS0yWGlWQy0wLUk/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank">HERE FOR FREEBIE</a>. This summer I went to a workshop about TDQs. It really helped me to better understand close reading. Currently, I am in the process of collaborating with other district primary teachers on TDQs. From that summer workshop, I wanted to share a packet of TDQ stems I put into a pdf file. I printed mine out. They are on a ring to help me when needing to create questions. <strong><span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;">5.</span></strong> Girls on the Run- I am so glad that I volunteered to be part of this program as an assistant coach! It happens twice a week after school. It is a great program that helps young ladies (3rd - 5th grade) to build self esteem and encourage others. I enjoy the activities we do with the girls. In December, we will be running a 5k as a team! Sorry no pictures!<br />
<br />
I am so looking forward to this Wednesday! It's our 50th day of school! Kindergarten will have a sock hopping, jump roping, hoola hooping, frisbee flinging, and bowling kind of day!<br />

I have been meaning to blog and write to tell about some things going on in my "school" life. Just been busy with workshops (text-dependent questions, writing workshop, Leader in Me), first weeks of school, and adjusting to a new school. It has been a positive and easy transition... changing schools. Everyone has been so kind and helpful. My new kinderkids are sweet and already getting into their routines by the end of this 2nd week of school. (I am missing my previous kiddos and friends!) I wanted to say hello and share a WRITE banner that I made for my writing center. Just click the picture below to get the freebie.</div>

I think another month has gone by... and I am finally getting to this post. This summer, I have thought about different ideas to share, but honestly, this summer, my main focus is on rejuvenating and relaxing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been in my new classroom, cleaning and organizing to make room for all of my stuff. My "stuff" filled up 9 vehicles. 7 to school and 2 to home. My new classroom already has stuff in it left over from the previous owner- a retired teacher. So, I spent 2 days to sort through things to figure out what to keep, save for other team members, and throw out. Last year, my district adopted the Reading Street series. The Kindergarten Reading Street boxes are humongous and bulky, taking up valuable classroom real estate. I kept going into the different boxes to get the different books for each week or unit. These boxes are colorful, but technically not ideal for storage. This year, I decided to get rid of those boxes... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxn97LOyZTBe7yWIKq_NRdJJucPO1AvhjPrFDcKowoDi9yOauvaxrwk3BWIMkWd9sQmNzWHqKz6SqE5OXxZt0f61PTd3bOnIywdpwPy-ZYh1qWFp00fIYlxS7W-wqfv27r88iluWDlS5GO/s1600/ReadStOrganization2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxn97LOyZTBe7yWIKq_NRdJJucPO1AvhjPrFDcKowoDi9yOauvaxrwk3BWIMkWd9sQmNzWHqKz6SqE5OXxZt0f61PTd3bOnIywdpwPy-ZYh1qWFp00fIYlxS7W-wqfv27r88iluWDlS5GO/s1600/ReadStOrganization2.png" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
So, I used some plastic tubs to combine all the unit books together. Here's a picture of what I did...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt0uTmEvSz4eOZ34ZwNOBM5r2_bTKPADXqQk8k_3pwLEo7EI4a_uhWMk7PoRm9365J5qjeBuMrRehlAnjfD4HLZshuoVarWbfNsz144zpaST6braOwm1kDuMDUmfxUHbFFAyScXvwjVZ-h/s1600/ReadStOrganization.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt0uTmEvSz4eOZ34ZwNOBM5r2_bTKPADXqQk8k_3pwLEo7EI4a_uhWMk7PoRm9365J5qjeBuMrRehlAnjfD4HLZshuoVarWbfNsz144zpaST6braOwm1kDuMDUmfxUHbFFAyScXvwjVZ-h/s1600/ReadStOrganization.png" height="213" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I made some Reading Street labels for the plastic bins. I added them onto this picture to see what they would look like. :0)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Earlier this year, I made some Reading Street mailing labels to use on file folders. When I came across an activity or idea I wanted to remember for a particular Reading Street unit, I could add it to the folder. Before this past year, I had always kept my stuff in thematic tubs. Now, I do a combination of skills and themes. I am also sharing my mailing labels for the Reading Street weekly units. These mailing labels use Hello Literacy fonts: Hello Basic & Hello Firstie. So if you do not have them, they may look funny on the mailing label. (<a href="http://www.helloliteracy.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Hello Literacy</a> fonts are free on her blog.)<br />

I will be starting my 3rd week of summer! Time is just flying by so quickly. I have been meaning to post here on my little old blog, but we have been having some technical difficulties with our dns server. Still trying to figure that one out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also haven't posted in a while due to end of school year craziness and transferring to a new school! I will still be teaching kindergarten. :0) I am going to a <b>bucket filling</b> school that will be starting the <b>Leader in Me</b> program this upcoming school year! I have incorporated bucket filling concepts into my classroom for the past several years. It is a great way to look for the positives. This past school year, I wanted to include the 7 Habits, but didn't get to it like I wanted to. So, I am beyond excited about this new adventure, and getting an opportunity to work with some friends again! :0)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have blog stalked some, and thought <a href="http://thepolishedteacher.blogspot.com/2014/06/font-astic-favorites-tag.html" target="_blank">Ash's Font-astic Favorites</a> is a great lead in for me to get back into some blogging. I love fonts. Back in the day, I bought CDs of fonts for my scrapbook journaling. I tend to stick with Hello Literacy's fonts now, because I cannot keep it straight on which ones are commercial or not. It was fun looking at some fonts that I do not use regularly!</div>

Jen over at <span style="color: lime;"><i>That First Grade Blog</i></span> wrote up a great summary of Chapter 2 of the second edition of Daily 5. Chapter 2 goes into details about the core beliefs. These beliefs are trust and respect, community, choice, accountability, brain research, transitions as brain and body breaks, and 10 steps to Independence. The last core belief, 10 steps to independence, is given a whole chapter- Chapter 3. Instead of repeating what Jen wrote up, and saving me some time, I decided to just focus on <b>community</b>, <b>choice</b>, and <b>transitions</b> as brain and body breaks. Click the above icon to visit Jen and read more about the core beliefs of Daily 5.<br />
<br />
At the beginning of the year, I focus on building <b>community</b> to get my little kinders to become a "family". I use morning and afternoon meetings. My morning meetings follow a combination of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1889609110/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new" target="_blank">Dr. Becky Bailey's Conscious Discipline</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Morning-Meeting-Book-Roxann-Kriete/dp/1892989093/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396221198&sr=8-1&keywords=morning+meeting+book" target="_blank">Roxanne Kriete's Morning Meeting</a>. After our morning routine and Read to Self time, we start our day with a morning meeting.<br />
<ul>
<li> First, my kinders stand in a large circle at our meeting area. </li>
<li>Next, I play a community building song that has my kinders doing actions together. Some of students' favorite songs are by Dr. Jean (Hello Friend or Ride That Pony). </li>
<li>Then, we sit in a large circle and pass a morning greeting around. </li>
<li>Last, we discuss our goal for the day to help our classroom become a better place. </li>
<li>After that, we move on to our morning message and word work goal. </li>
</ul>
In the afternoon, I have my students group together for the last part of the day. This is a time to focus on the positives of our day. We share what we are proud of or how someone filled our bucket. This way my students can go home and hopefully share some of their successes of the day. Success mapping is a way to help build optimistic attitudes. According to brain research, optimism can be taught, and students who have optimistic attitudes are more likely to be better problem solvers than those with pessimistic attitudes. We end our day with a fun brain break song (usually a Just Dance Kids video on youtube).<br />
<br />
In addition to my classroom meetings, I use Kagan cooperative learning strategies to build classroom community. Sometimes, we have a meeting during the day to discuss any problems and ways to solve them.<br />
<br />
<b>Choice</b> is such a deterrent to behavioral problems. I remember sitting in one of my early childhood classes, and Dr. Becky Bailey was telling us that giving children choices would help with those who wanted power. I applied this technique one night watching my nephew. This three year old cutie did not want to go to bed. Instead of arguing, I told him he was going to go to bed, but he had a choice in how he went: piggyback ride or horseback ride. He choose piggyback (tired me out with him on my back). He went to bed without any issues. The next night, he looked forward to trying the horseback ride to bed. In class, I have had children who do not want to draw or write. So I gave them choices depending on their needs. Sometimes it is the writing materials (markers or crayons) or place (carpet or small table). I apply this to the Daily 5, in a way that works for me and my kindergarteners. My students choose their books to read during Daily 5. They choose from one of the 3-4 word work choices at their assigned area.<br />
<br />
<b>Transitions</b> seem to go smoothly as I use music to signal clean up time. I use my ipod with pre-made categories to help with transitions. Dr. Jean has some clean up songs that my students sing along as they put away materials. After word work, I like to use my whiteboard and overhead to display <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/gbutkus" target="_blank">HeidiSongs singing and moving</a> to a sight word song. My students know that they must clean up before joining, so they get right on task and join as soon as they can. They love to sing and dance!<br />

I am joining in on Jen's, from <a href="http://thatfirstgradeblog.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">That First Grade Blog,</a> book club. The new edition of Daily 5 is the book of choice. I have bought it a few weeks ago, and have not started reading it yet. It has been a bit busy around here... hence my not posting. It is my last day of spring break, and I did want to post something... so here I am. :0) (Okay, I have now read it!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thatfirstgradeblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-daily-5-second-edition-book-club.html" target="_blank"><img alt="http://thatfirstgradeblog.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-daily-5-second-edition-book-club.html" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBvnpC_DrjmLn23Dm58YgACy4KdIuzGrzHU2cNwXPhi6CQZPghIiSSV9LqefZfPZs3RZAEV0hLql-bioHxqNg6zfExzuhx0CWqTnA0V0IvwdoZSeSwmp_aFqo4zuqEVjd8iYmNJJFDyUH-/s1600/bookclub.jpeg" height="200" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What should you know about me?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have implemented Daily 5 in my kindergarten classroom for the past 6 years. I am not a true Daily 5 follower, as I have made modifications each year to meet my classroom needs. Each year, I do something different depending on what is going on. Currently, this year has been a challenge since my district has mandated Reading Street as its series to follow during our literacy block. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>How did I hear about Daily 5?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I first heard about Daily 5 when I moved down from teaching first grade to kindergarten (about 7 years ago). My good friend, Krissy, and first grade team leader, got the whole entire first grade team on board to follow Daily 5. She wrote a grant for all first grade classrooms at our school to have ipods as a listening center. She certainly peeked my interest, and I borrowed her book (the first edition) and couldn't put it down. It was easy reading. I had my hesitations about it, but was able to see how first grade embraced and loved it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What experiences have I had implementing Daily 5?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I first started Daily 5, I called it Daily 3. I focused on Read to Self, Listening to Reading, and Word Work. My kinders had choices of which one they wanted to go to. Now, I implement all components, though not on a daily basis. Read to Self, Word Work, and Writing Workshop are my main components. Sometimes, we get to Read to Someone and Listen to Reading. This is the first year that I have focused less on Listen to Reading and more on Partner Reading (Read to Someone). My students still have choice, but we are all doing the same activity at the same time. Over two years ago, I went to <a href="http://kindergals.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kim Adsit</a>'s "Differentiated Instruction for the Little Guy" and learned how she organized her groups of students. I have 4 areas named after some owls I have made and hung in my classroom. Each area has a space that has materials for all components of Daily 5 and my Math Stations. Each group of students rotate through the different areas visiting one per day, making choices in that area. I have done it this way for two years, and it has worked for my classes.<b> </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Does what my class do, during literacy block, resemble the before or after description of the sisters' classrooms?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My class resembles the "after" description of the sisters' classrooms. However, it is still a work in progress. I still have to give student reminders or go over routines. I am looking forward to see if there are some tips in helping me teach my students how to self monitor themselves more. A couple of weeks ago, 2 kindergarten teachers from another school came to visit my class to see how I implemented Daily 5 with Reading Street. They were full of positivity, and my kinders made them feel welcomed. One comment made from one of the teachers was where were my misbehaving students. I have them, but they take their reading seriously and enjoy learning through the Daily 5 structure.<b> </b>My kinders also love to show others how they do things in their classroom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What is one thing I read in Chapter 1 that I think is worth remembering?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>"...Daily 5 is not a prescriptive program to be followed blindly, the same way each day, week, month, and year. Instead, we as educators need to respond and react to the diverse needs of our own students."</i> I remember when Daily 5 first came out, and I did not follow it to the T. I was criticized and told I was not following Daily 5. Okay, I was not, but I used elements from it to make it work for me and my class. This really hits home this year as my district mandated that we had to<b> </b>follow Reading Street with fidelity the first 12 weeks of school. I implemented Daily 5, but with resources I already had. Reading Street did not give me tools to do this. I also use cooperative learning structures for group activities, and Reading Street does not encourage this. At least, not in the teacher manual of daily teacher talk. I know this from trying to follow it, but also knowing that one resource is not the best. I am one who uses different resources to teach my students.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What is one change I am ready to make in my classroom?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I read and find more about Daily 5, I will modify and adjust to my students. I am still working on making my math structure better in my classroom. It used to work well, then I had to use the GoMath series. For the past three years, I keep adjusting and modifying my math structure to include the GoMath series in a way that helps my students. Looking forward to getting more ideas from others about how they<b> </b>are able to combine using a series with Daily 3 for math.<b></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

February is here? What happened to January? December? I have enjoyed my winter break with my family and friends, that I have completely neglected any blogging. Since it is the <strike>first</strike> second day of February, I thought this was a perfect opportunity for me to join in on Currently.</div>

I am not a huge tv watcher, but I do love me some Bachelor episodes. This season is going a bit slow... less drama. Less so than the previous seasons. </div>

This Thursday, I will have my formal observation. I need to prep for it by cleaning up some of my clutter. It is amazing how fast things pile up. Hence the reason, I need a maid!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has been a cold and damp week here in Florida. Hopefully it will soon be sunshiney... and still cool. I am not ready for summer weather. That is what happens here though. One day it's 50F and the next day it's in the 80s!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I either need a teacher work day every Monday or get a maid/secretary to help me out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During winter break, I discovered Sims Freeplay, and am having fun creating homes for my Sims to live in. I am craving some Indian food right now. After Thai and Vietnamese, I love Indian food. I have yet to go to Africa. I have been to 5/7 continents. An African safari is on my bucket list.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think little furry squirrels are just the cutest! I am using squirrel books to help my students learn more about the season of fall. One of my favorite squirrel songs is on an old tape. I haven't been able to find it the past few years when searching for a digital version. I was absolutely thrilled to find one online for FREE! I found it on <a href="http://www.naeyc.org/tyc/missjackie" target="_blank">NAEYC's song and activities</a> list. Scroll down to The Furry Squirrel Song. I use it for a fun morning meeting song as we do silly actions with it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My students observed squirrels on youtube videos. This one is great.</div>

They kept track of their observations in their squirrel journals. <br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
Just a quick post to share a little freebie with you for Thanksgiving. One of my favorite stories for Thanksgiving is <em><u>Turkey Trouble</u></em>. It is a sweet story about a turkey disguising himself as different animals. It has a fun ending for young children to enjoy.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Turkey-Trouble-Wendi-Silvano/dp/0761455299/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384827864&sr=1-1&keywords=turkey+trouble" target="_blank"><img alt="http://www.amazon.com/Turkey-Trouble-Wendi-Silvano/dp/0761455299/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1384827864&sr=1-1&keywords=turkey+trouble" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQikDSxpQWS9XfG2p42BV-yopwkPboqb_aCmjx5hyphenhyphenxm9O96Ozuj7aIDvMU0-bry_a_rdsqaqCPqw149SpbcLH2iQF6xBzplmTO9MOIIdoJ3PoKXtTZbNKcx5WLIymb3buL0fCDce7CHGpq/s1600/turkeytrouble.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I will be using this book to help practice retelling the story and working on numerals 11-20 with my students before the Thanksgiving holidays. I also like to use this book as a prelude to making our own classbook about how the turkey disguises himself. I will update on TPT once I get the photos taken.</div>

I meant to post sooner... but other things kept me busy! We said goodbye to my intern and a classmate. Then we got a new student. We celebrated the 50th day of school. My kindergarten team and I threw a baby shower for our teammate. I had Reading Endorsement classes. We started a running club for the kids in the mornings. My husband and I celebrated our 3rd anniversary. We had our annual costume parade and festivities. Now November is here!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong><span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;">1.)</span></strong> One Wednesday afternoon past, I was grouped with other teachers from other teams to work on a scarecrow. Each group of teachers worked on a scarecrow. The kids are suppose to vote for their favorite. Do you know which one I helped to create? <strong><em><span style="font-size: large;">Make a guess</span></em></strong> in the comment section below and the first person to make the correct guess can have <strong><span style="color: #0b5394;">one item free</span></strong> from my TPT store.</div>

<strong><span style="color: orange; font-size: x-large;">2.)</span></strong> My kindergarten team and I threw a baby shower for our teammate Jen. She is due late November, but we predict she is due earlier. She is having a little girl, and is not fond of pink. I looked for pastel colors of M&Ms and did not have luck. I ended up getting yellow candy melts to put over the white popcorn. It tasted like kettle corn. I added sprinkles too, but it cannot be seen in this particular photo.</div>

Yesterday was a <strong><span style="font-size: large;">teacher workday</span></strong> filled with a variety of activities: conferencing, waffle making, putting skills into the gradebook for the team, lesson planning, creating buddy activities with my 3rd grade buddy, remembering a previous co-worker with a plaque/tree presentation, helping with paperwork for the new running club, and organizing my clutter. It was a great day! So tonight I finished grading some paperwork and created a Ghostmallows sheet that my kinders will do with their big buddies. We'll have an intern read the story, <u>We're Going on a Ghost Hunt</u>, and have our students sort and graph their ghostmallows. Afterwards they will add different combinations of their ghostmallows. Click below to get it if you want it!</div>

What do you do during CAFE's mini lessons? The last two weeks, I focused on Stretchy Snake with my kinderkids. There are so many cute freebies on TPT about Reading Strategy buddies. However, I am using what I had found originally before I discovered TPT. I still use <a href="http://www.bainbridgeclass.com/beanieposters.pdf" target="_blank">Christina Bainbridge's mini posters</a> (free) and now I have included <a href="http://guided-reading-101-printables-strategies-and-word-work-158699/" target="_blank">Deanna Jump's Guided Reading activities</a> ($) to help with introducing and practicing reading strategies using little stuffed animals. I only introduce one at a time. So far, we have Eagle Eyes, Lips the Fish, Stretch Snake, and Chunky Monkey. I post my CAFE menu on my cabinets.</div>

Two weeks ago, with our Reading Street series big book, <u>Flowers</u>, I took out some bean cards made from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Math-Literacy-Centers-for-Little-Sprouts-Plants-Common-Core-Aligned-661143" target="_blank">Growing Kinder's Math & Literacy for Little Sprouts</a>. I dispersed the 12 green bean cards around the room and had my students work in pairs. They folded their papers into quarters to make 4 boxes. They worked together to use "Stretchy Snake" to sound out CVC words. Then they numbered the box to match the bean's number, wrote the word, and drew a picture. They looked like they were having a good time, and they did such a great job working together!</div>

While they were working, some of my kinders finished quickly, so I had them do 4 more on the back. I thought to myself about doing this activity again, but differentiating it for my students. So this past week I created another version using fall leaves. Some of my kinders needed more challenging words, so I moved to using some blends and sh- words. Many need practice with CVC words, so I had those out as well. We colored a yellow or red dot on top of our papers to help us remember which words we were going to try and read during this mini-lesson.</div>

I made a fall packet of words that can be used for kindergarten or first graders. There are short vowels, long vowels, and blends. I also included black and white patterns so you can print on colored cardstock and write your own words on them. You can find this 70 page packet at my TPT store for $2. Hubby and I went out this morning to the farmer's market and picked out some yummies for our dinner. I have completed my Reading Endorsement assignments for the week, and getting involved with a little blogging. I am so proud of my little kinders when they are reading to self. They use their book boxes (IKEA cardboard magazine holders) to store their reading materials. Inside, I have them keep their Reading Street Buddy Reader, a couple of Reading Street easy readers, a couple leveled readers, and their own books made. They also have a ziplock bag that holds their reading tools: "Keep Your Eye on the Words" pointers and bookmarks for sharing with partners. This was the first year that I incorporated <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Blasting-Off-with-Readers-Workshop-Unit-1-by-Kim-Adsit-and-Michele-Scannell-261292" target="_blank">Kim Adsit's Blasting Off with Reader's Workshop</a>. I am loving the anchor charts and ideas for mini lessons! She even has mini anchor charts that I have used for my students to glue into their reading journals for reference.</div>

This week will be a sad, yet happy week. It will be my intern's last week with us. We are going on a field trip to the zoo on her last day! Should be fun!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am in need of a teacher work day to catch up on paperwork! Luckily we will have one on an upcoming Monday. I was going to rearrange my classroom furniture then, but yesterday morning, I was inspired. So glad I did. Because of the smaller space, I tried 3 tables of 6 kids. My kinderkids are flexible and great at moving themselves around for different projects requiring space. So I squeezed another table in, and I am loving how much table space they have for themselves. I just don't have a table to catch my clutter! </div>

I'm leaving you with a little treat. My reading bookmarks needed some revamping, as my previous ones in the above photo were made over 14 years ago!! I pass them out to my students when I want them to share about something particular about their reading. For example, we have used character and setting bookmarks. While reading a book, they find a picture of the character or setting in the book. When it's time to share, they can turn right to the page and share the character or setting. It's a great way for me to also observe who knows characters and settings.</div>

Five for Friday... and it's on time! My class and I just finished 6 weeks together! I am starting to feel back on track, and human again. :0) Kindergarteners have lots of energy!</div>

<span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;"><strong>1.</strong></span> Even though this happened last week on Thursday, I wanted to share. One of my kindergarten parents came into the classroom with a surprise package for me. I wish I took a picture of the beautiful bow she made. I thought about it after the fact. So I just wrapped the brown ribbon around the box... not the same. Oh well! Now I have my very own Erin Condren notepad for my table. :0) </div>

<strong><span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;">1</span></strong>. My county has started to use Reading Street this school year. It really limits what we can use, especially when we are suppose to follow it with fidelity. Last week, we were working with the <em>We Are So Proud</em> unit. In the afternoons, I used Pete the Cat stories with math. Here is one tying in the words (red, white, and blue) with number sense. I found the tracers from <a href="http://hoorayforkindergarten.blogspot.com/2012/09/pattern-for-pete.html" target="_blank">Hooray for Kindergarten</a> and I created my own I have ___ blue buttons writing prompt. <span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;"><strong>3</strong></span>. This past week, we made paper bag platypuses to go along with Reading Street's <em>Plaidypus Lost</em> unit. My kinderkids loved this story. The pattern for the <a href="http://www.daniellesplace.com/html/AustralianCrafts.html" target="_blank">paperbag platypus came from Danielle's Place.</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<strong><span style="color: magenta; font-size: x-large;">4</span></strong>. I am really excited how my<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rate-Your-Understanding-Owl-Version-832406" target="_blank"> Rate Your Understanding</a> is coming together in my classroom. I introduced the scale to my students during the second week of school. During the following weeks, we began rating ourselves on how they well they can tell the sounds that each letter makes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then each child graphed where they felt they were at. On top of the quarter page, I created a label stating, "I can say the sounds for each letter." This was printed on file folder labels. The graph has room for a beginning, middle, and ending date. This graph allows me to help my students track their various learning goals in the different subject areas.</div>

For example, at the word work centers, my students use their learning goals books to help them focus on the letters they need to work on. For example, they make the specific letters out of playdough or cubes. Some find matching magnetic letters. They do this by looking at their learning goal books. Behind the graph sheet are specific pages about which letters and sounds they know. Each letter highlighted is one they have shown that they already know. The ones not highlighted are the ones they work on at centers. </div>

We will move on to working with words once letters are mastered. I already have 2 children starting to work with words. I will soon be including these tracking learning goal sheets into my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rate-Your-Understanding-Owl-Version-832406" target="_blank">Rate Your Understanding</a>. Check it out for a cheaper price, as it will increase with the new addition. I plan to add them later on today or tomorrow morning. </div>

So I bought more and finally numbered them. I will be working on making a math stations chart for my students. I think my new bunch of kinderkids will love playing math games with their partners. I am really enjoying this new bunch of kinderkids. They are full of personality and fun!</div>

I have been back to school for a month already! Kinders have had 3 weeks of school. I've taken some photos, but not too many. Hopefully, I will get better! We have started our new reading series, Reading Street. It is different from how we used to teach. It's taking some time to learn and adjust to it. I forgot how busy and tired I am at the beginning of the school year. This long weekend is much needed at this time of the year. Gives me a chance to rejuvenate. I'm joining in on <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2013/09/currently-september.html?showComment=1378123677486#c558748842098303454" target="_blank">Farley's currently</a>.</div>

I am getting lots accomplished this long weekend: lesson plans, gradebook for team, Mimio (IWB) creation to introduce PASI skills, grocery shopping, yummy meals, visit with my mom and sister, etc...</div>

I am so excited to finally get to meet my friend's little girl, Ansley!! She was born about 3 weeks ago, and I haven't seen her yet! Last weekend, I was sick. So looking forward to holding her. :0) Thinking about what kind of meal to make before visiting or flowers to pick up for my friend.</div>

I wish the temperatures would start cooling off a little faster. I love fall weather, and we don't really get that down here in Florida. I just want the highs to be below the 90s.</div>

Last Monday started off quite grand. I met my sweet junior intern! She is bubbly and full of positive energy- love that!! My kinderkids and I already love her! Well, once I started letting the kids into the classroom on Monday, our tech facilitator came in and told me I was needed in the studio- for live school news. I was apprehensive- as I do not like to be put on the spot. As I get in the studio, I had to be quiet as the news had already started... I am wondering why I am there. They ask me to stand next to some PTA moms and children. I see the children are holding something I have been wanting for quite a long time! I started jumping up and down! It's an IPAD!! My kinderkids were so cute. One asked if I would share it with him. :0) We will be using it this week for a listening center. Reading Rainbow has a great app for reading books to kids. Do you know of any apps I could use in my classroom with it?</div>

I am missing some of my friends who used to work with me at my current school. They have moved on to other schools. I need to visit one in her new kindergarten classroom and the other in her new assistant principal office. This would make my heart happy to keep in touch with these ladies. I am also working on running early in the mornings... this is tough for me, as I don't like to get up early in the morning. I just need to remind myself how good I feel after the run. I typically do eat a lot of veggies, but I think I eat more meat due to my husband being a carnivore. We joined a group that gets organic produce every other week. I am loving it so far. Just joined this past Thursday. We ate the strawberries, blueberries, and bananas already. I made a kale salad last night... never knew about a <a href="http://www.ahintofhoney.com/2012/10/massaged-kale-salad/" target="_blank">massaged kale salad</a>. I also boiled some golden beets... which taste just like regular beets... maybe a slight variance. Tonight I am planning on making a lasagna with some of the other veggies we got.</div>

I'm off again this Thursday! Hopefully I will get to post some pics of my classroom. Happy Labor Day!</div>
